Deer control supports Helmeted Honeyeater recovery
The Friends of Helmeted Honeyeater have been doing some wonderful, recovery work for this critically endangered bird species based around the Yellingbo Reserve in the Yarra Valley. Biodiversity 2027: Biodiversity Response Planning grants
The Biodiversity Response Planning Program is implementing Victoria’s plan for Biodiversity, Protecting Victoria’s Environment – Biodiversity 2037, in different places. Grants from the Biodiversity Response Planning program were allocated in mid-2018 for completion in 2021.
Commonwealth Funding (non-bushfire)
Wild Otways Initiative and Cardinia Creek Deer Coalition are federally funded Deer projects.
Victoria’s Deer Control Strategy
The Victorian government announced in November 2020 $18.25 million for the Deer Control Program (2021-24) to support the Deer control strategy; plus $4.4 million ongoing from 2024-25.

Melbourne Water
Melbourne Water is undertaking deer monitoring and control in its water catchments. MW has worked on 1-2 of the BRP project listed above and is currently undertaking significant control/eradication in the Cardinia Reservoir area. Funding and results are not known at this stage.
Victorian Deer Control Community Network (VDCCN)
The VDCCN is a member network that has the objective of working together to raise awareness and reduce the impact of feral deer in Victoria. The VDCCN was launched in May 2021 and has over 120 member groups and individuals. The VDCCN has received funding from the Victorian Deer Control Strategy program to assist with its administration and operation.
Invasive Species Council (ISC)
The ISC has funded a Deer Project Officer for three years (2020-2023) to raise awareness of the impact of feral deer and the need for effective control programs. This includes support to the VDCCN. Project Link: https://invasives.org.au/our-work/feral-animals/feral-deer/
National Feral Deer Action Plan
A National Feral Deer Action Plan is being developed to address the impact of deer across the country and employs a National Deer Management Coordinator and support staff.
